Blockchain systems and protocol design

Blockchain design, trust assumptions and incentive mechanisms. A systems engineering approach with Guarani LLC.

Start with the coordination problem

A blockchain project starts with a question: which participants need to share state or verify an operation without relying on a single operator? This helps determine whether a distributed protocol serves the need or a conventional database is sufficient.

Make trust assumptions explicit

Who can write, validate, upgrade or pause the system? Which components rely on a third party? Describing these responsibilities makes the protocol’s limits and trade-offs between openness, control and simplicity easier to assess.

Connect incentives to system behaviour

Protocol rules influence how participants behave. Consider the resources required, participation conditions and what happens when interests diverge. An incentive mechanism should be evaluated for its role in the system rather than the presence of a token alone.

Define the scope before implementation

Describe the use case, participants, shared state and known constraints. The discussion concerns technical design and implementation; it is neither investment advice nor a security certification.
